RIAN JAMES ALCID (HE/HIM)
Rian is a multifaceted dancer, choreographer, and performer born and raised in Tovaangar/Los Angeles, CA. Rian’s work attempts to access emotional, queer, and ethnic liberation by retracing his sociocultural and familial upbringings. His artistic practice is rooted in the exploration, embodiment, and kinetic representation of both codified and uncodified movement, sourcing from modern, post-modern, and contemporary dance with an emphasis in floorwork, release technique, and improvisation.
As a performer, Rian has had the privilege of dancing for Ariel Scott, Ground Grooves TV Production, Maya Nadine Billig, Victoria Marks, and The Marías. He is a Scholarship Recipient of the second annual Los Angeles Choreographer’s Institute, hosted by the Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company. Rian has presented multiple works supported by theaters throughout Los Angeles including the REDCAT Roy and Edna Disney/CALARTS Theater, Stomping Ground LA, Glorya Kaufman Dance Theater UCLA, and the RenArts Theater Space.
Rian received his B.A. in Dance from University of California, Los Angeles, and holds a Career Technical Education Teaching Credential in Arts, Media, and Entertainment. Currently serving as a Dance Advisor at Renaissance Arts Academy, his pedagogy is shaped by the cumulative influence of his studies, under the tutelage of Sarri Sanchez, Erik Speth, Nguyễn Nguyên, Jay Carlon, Kate Hutter-Mason, Kyle Abraham, Gracie Whyte, Natsuo Tomita, Cheng-Chieh Yu, Victoria Marks, and Susan Foster. Within this framework, Rian commits to uplifting and supporting historically underrepresented and underserved communities in pursuing the arts and achieving success in both secondary and postsecondary education.
